Why should I seek counselling?

There are many reasons why at certain times in our lives it can be useful to make the most of the tools counselling can offer us instead of trying to weather it on our own. Sometimes we find ourselves stuck in a traumatic experience, or we are going through a very difficult period, facing dilemmas that seem impossible. Some such situations include:

  • The illness or death of a loved one, person or pet
  • A difficult decision I’m faced with, e.g. a separation or divorce, a job change, etc.
  • A separation I can’t get over
  • A health problem, whether mine or of a loved one, which is causing me stress and worry
  • Relationship problems
  • Difficulties in the workplace
  • Family problems
  • Phobias

Several people find it useful to go into therapy because they want to find what they really want to do when faced with a challenging decision e.g. to marry, have a child, change jobs, divorce, emigrate, etc.

There are also people who choose counseling because of existential angst and feel a need to examine or reassess the meaning of their lives.

If you’re not going to provide me with solutions why should I come to you?

Indeed, it is not me who is going to find any solutions for you. Even if I did, how certain is it that these “solutions” would be the right ones for you personally and the particularities of your life? That is why I believe it is much more fruitful in the long run to assist you in finding your own solutions, by helping you work through anxiety, emotional distress and confusion, so that you may pave your own way, and not follow other people’s.
